Did you know that on average Sunscreen only lasts 3-4 hours and then after that, nothing. No more sun protection! So how do you make sure your skin is protected over the rest of the day without ruining your makeup? Reapply your sunscreen over your makeup with these easy tips.
There are a few things you can do to get yourself set for the day so you aren’t constantly touching up. With a long weekend and loads of sun in the coming weeks its best we get you sun safe and sexy all at the same time.
Lets prep first:
- Load up on SPF in your moisturiser or foundation.
- Don’t skimp on water. In both your body and in your skincare – hydration is key.
I love to use Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturisers but now that they are hard to find here in Oz, I’m switching to Ilia Sheer Vivid Tinted Moisturiser. Both have SPF 20 but the Ilia version has more of a matte texture so its perfect for hot weather.
Or if you are prone to sunburn you might need something a little stronger like Invisible Zinc SPF 50+ Sheer Defence tinted moisturiser.
You can use tinted moisturisers in place of your heavier foundation while its so humid and hot. Less sweaty thick feeling makeup on your face and a better level of defence against the UV falling from our skies.
After a few hours you’re going to need to top up the sunscreen so you can continue the Australia Day BBQ or pool party in style. There are a few ways you can do this but two in particular are easy peasy.
SPF in Powder and in Liquid or a spray.
In powder you could use something like Jane Iredale Amazing Base Loose Mineral Powder which has SPF 20. Be sure to hit your high spots like the top of your forehead, your nose and cheek bones. These are areas that are sweat or wiped off easily.
For a spray, its a little harder to find a makeup specific product with a cruelty free status. But you can use Ella Bache Great SPF50 Sunglow spray over your makeup. Just be sure to close your eyes first! This is a perfect way to reapply sunscreen without ruining your makeup, and it has a bronze glow, perfect for summer.

Whatever you choose to use make sure you blot away any sweat with either Blot Papers or tissue before topping up your sunscreen. Then wait twenty minutes for your sunscreen to kick in if you are in strong sun, particularly in the middle of the day.
Do you have any tips on reapplying your sunscreen without ruining your makeup? Have you had to sacrifice your sun protection for the sake of looking good all day?
I hope this helps
